I just learned a few moments ago that the internal BK MP servers are going to be shut off on May 31st ALL!
This is terrible news for our aging BK...
We need to come up with a solution all... What are we gonna do? This is gonna greatly affect the BK community... Good games. -iLeeT_PeeP

Sure, but you always can play multiplayer in connecting the players directly by their own IP, right ? To organize a game, creating a special thread only for that is a good way (this is what we do in the french forum).

We need to spread the word about this before it happens... Well... If u think its necessary. A handful of BK players are gonna have no link to a community now... We need to spread the word so a larger part of the community is not lost. Good games all! -iLeeT_PeeP

Let me throw this out for discussion.
You guys might consider STEAM. NIVAL already has a working agreement with STEAM so it may be possible to kill two birds with one stone.
I was looking at STEAM last night and Noticed that another old game seems to have new life with old and new players. Age of Empires II. This game has always been one of my favorites but i had not played it for at least 8 or 9 years. I noticed that Microsoft had updated the Code and there had been another Release called The Forgotten. Age of Mythology Extended is coming out in about a month. What is a bit new is STEAM and the Community offers Updates and Mods. Also, as you play the missions, they have developed a Series of awards based on your gameplay.
I bought AoE and played it... it has always been a great game.
I'm thinking that perhaps we can approach NIVAL and Steam and work out something.
It won't hurt to try... and there does not seem to be many options here.

How would we... "Just a gamer types" Approach these companies with such a proposition MP? They wont even listen to us about making another patch that would take them 5 minutes to compile for example... I doubt they would even listen to us about anything... BUT! As you said... I guess it could be worth a try. Good games... -iLeeT_PeeP

Let me try to enlist some help and see what we can do.
I'm not a Multiplayer, so is there anything you can share with me that might be useful as to connections?

Blitzkrieg in Steam could also bring some new blood around here, who knows?

This is indeed terrible news. When I first heard this I thought just the BK server was going to be shut down, but now I have read a couple of articles and see that Gamespy itself is going away. Not that I ever liked GS, but it did function fairly well, and was the only real way to play BK online. Something that most of the folks in this forum do not realize is that the BK multiplayer community is still very large, on a good day there will be ~200 people online. Setting up IP games using forum threads is an incredibly wonky way to try to get a game going, it is nothing like having a lobby full of players where you can pick up a game at any time. Is Hamachi a possibility ? I don't like Steam either, but at this point if they were to pick BK up it would probably be the best solution. Edit to dd: I just found out that this was actually announced more than a year ago.

You're right because i couldn't imagine that there are still so many multiplayers . Is Hamachi a possibility ? I know that some years ago some players used Hamachi to play online but actually i don't know .

The BK Multiplayer community has always been larger than the BK Mod community. Most folks in either community do not know that the other even exists. People like myself and Peep are the rare people who are active in both the Mod and Multiplayer BK crowds.
Also: In the remaining time left on the GS server, I think an effort should be made to get as many of the Multiplayers as possible to get an account here- as sort of a lifeboat. IP play does of course work, but with the aggregate knowledge of both communities I think a better solution can be found.

Can't you use a VPN ( virtual private network) tunnel between players? I used to use it to connect with clients when I worked at a software company many years ago. I think we used puTTY but it was a long time ago and I can't remember the details of setting it up. EDIT: I guess it's not that easy. I guess someone would have to setup a unix server for self-administered VPN connection, which is what we had at my job. There is an interesting article here. It was written in 2003/2004. I once had FreeBSD installed on a partition on a dual-boot machine but that was a long time ago. There is Tunngle and EvolveHQ that basically serve the same purpose as GameSpy. Jagged: I wondered about just doing direct IP, if that worked, and if there was any unplayable lag. If it works, why even worry about some random guy somewhere? Just have MP clubs that use email or instant messenger to exchange IPs.

You can connect via direct IP to IP with BK and it works fine (better than GS even). It is the lobby and matchmaking part that are going to be the big problems. Without a lobby how do you know that some random guy in some other part of the world wants to play a BK match? P.S: I just checked, and there are currently 32 players in the GS BK lobby, with 6 games happening right now. Prime time for BK is evening in Europe, when there is often ~200 players in the BK lobby on GS.
