I don't think it's the AMD dual core who's to blame. When sound starts looping, it's merely got to do something with the soundcard. Whether expensive or cheap, soundcards and windows can sometimes be problematic.
Now, if there's one thing I've learned over the BK years: saving my game!

Well, I do have the game installed on a different hard drive, so when I do take the plunge and migrate to the Win7 pc, I'll be able to network the computers together and copy the saved game files over. Then it's just a matter of installing the basic game. I have a long weekend coming up, and I'm really thinking about making the move.
And Kaoz, I'm rather certain it's my AMD Dual Core processor. It's been a known problem since the game came out. They even developed a patch specifically for it that sets the affinity of the dual core to a single core. It helps, but doesn't totally resolve the problem. I manually set the affinity to single core when starting the game. But it will be interesting to see if I continue to have the problem after moving to a dual core Intel processor. I'll post here here when I do.

Have you tried another game engine? I recall having trouble with the patched game.exe of BK. More recent releases of BK (Anthology, Panzerkrieg do not require a dual core patch. I run Stalingrad from an installation based on Panzerkrieg and so far everything runs fine.

Just to put my issue to a close on this thread, it appears my issue has been heat, specifically with the graphics card. I built my system 7+years ago, and the cases weren't nearly as well thought out then as they are now. Now there's a line of gaming cases that allow for more, and better airflow. Anyway, Quin suggested I try leaving my side panel off the computer case, and you know I recall having to do that some years back but I can't remember just why now, anyway, that appears to have resolved my issue, so go figure!!
Just as an update, I was still experiencing random freezes, although not always as frequent. I'm beginning to think that Nvidia cards just don't like the game, since this is my 2nd card that I can think of having this problem with. For some reason the games coding just makes the GPU overheat. So I remembered that years ago I bought a dual fan card that attached to the mobo in a pci slot, and amazingly enough I was able to locate it within a few minutes. No contacts, just a blank plastic piece, and then it gets it's power from the usual 4 prong connector from the PDU. The fans blow air upward. It just so happens that my video card is in a pci-e slot right above the pci slot, so the fans are about an inch or so away from the video card. It couldn't be a better set up. It also has a variable speed slider that is accessible from the back of the pc. So I installed it, turned the variable speed to max and cranked up Stalingrad. I was able to play out the current mission freeze free. I'm really hoping this puts an end to the problem for me. I only hope that the mobo I just ordered has the same pci-e and pci slot placements because I'm gonna use my current video card in the new system, or I'm afraid I'll be keeping my XP machine up and running for playing BK.
Another update. I was just playing for a couple of hours, was close to completing my mission and had a screen freeze. I only had one save in the very beginning. There's nothing quite as frustrating! Even with the extra fan blowing air on my video card. I downloaded an app (GPU-Z.0.8) that will show the temp of my GPU. Unfortunately there's no option to have it always on top, but it will log to a file. I'm curious to see the temperature difference between normal operation and in-game.
Well I played 3 hours freeze free, but this time I did set the dual core infinity to a single core. The GPU temp at normal operating conditions is 30-31º C. It never got higher than 34º C while I was playing, and that high was after I finished the mission and was in the pre-briefing for the next mission. The next time I play I'll leave the infinity set to dual and see if that affects the GPU temp in anyway, although I doubt it will. I could put the side panel back on to see what the difference in normal operating temp is.
