You can add any vehicle in its destroyed state to your map without modding. Place the unit on the map. Save the map as XML. Edit the file, find the unit and change HP="-100" (the health of unit). Save it. And the unit is now a wreck on the map. Edit: 10th of May 2020, the wreck unit should be for the neutral party otherwise it might still fight!

That's a very good tip.
Be careful if you do this with artillery pieces. Even though they are destroyed, they can still be crewed (used as well) by supply trucks and are indestructible afterwards.

Mate, it's just not working for me... In my XML test map, I place and choose the unit (a tank, for instance), go to Properties, set the Health value to -100, the health bar goes red with just a peep showing up on the left, but the it still looks intact, and what's even worst, if it belongs to the enemy, it attacks! By the way, Health value never shows -100, even though I write the number down; it usually displays a 1. I'm currently experimenting with the IUMII mod, and using version 1.4 of the ME.

Is because you're still doing this in MapEditor. What keep is saying: save the map as .xml. Then open xml with any xml editor. Find the correct unit and change the value.

However... After further testing, an "XMLed" tank, even while looking all shot up, just decided to wipe out an enemy infantry squad that happened to pass close by. Then, taking also into consideration what tedi88 wrote, am I still doing something wrong, or, as an additional measure, should ownership of the wreck be set (through the Properties window) to a neutral party?

Wow, zombie-tank returning from the grave... Sounds very odd, but yes, best to use neutral stance, i guess, because i haven't used this manner yet.

kaoz is correct. You need save the map as XML. The open this map with a XML-editor for instance notepad. Find the unit, change it HP="-100". Save. Open the map in Editor again. Now unit is and remains a wreck. Warlord . I have seen this done in several maps and I havn't until now come across a wreck unit shooting being it for player or AI.

Well, considering that I have been following the entire routine as described (using firstobject XML Editor), I kept thinking about this, and there's a point that can clarify whether I'm doing something wrong, or this just can happen:
XMLed wrecks look all shot up, or do they look as they do after being destroyed in actual battle? I did a little test with two Lancia armoured cars, one with the -100 HP, and the other being destroyed in battle, and they definitely don't look the same. The HP option is more than enough to represent a believable wreck, though.
However, setting the wrecks to belong to the neutral party in the game seems to me to be an answer; just to play it safe.

Hi Warlord , Today, I did came across a wreck fighting. I assume that I always had wrecks that had party = neutral. Today, I had wreck for party AI and did still fire. Conclusion, you needed to make sure that you make the unit you want appear as wreck on your map has party neutral. Screenshot. The battle of Oosterbeek, 1944

Maybe everybody know it already... Never try this method with any unit that have an infantry crew like artillery guns.
The gun can be resupplied via TRUCK or infantry and thus comes to life.
They will fight like a normal unit, except they cannot move, which they could under normal "conditions" ! (e.g. Pak40)
The gun will be undestroyable (not the crew) ! and it looks silly of course..
