Need help to be sure am using the best settings in MP to get good (or as good as can...lol) game play. I have not played in many years and have reloaded game so have lost what use to use. I played a game very recently and had to leave because was just too laggy and was difficult to play. This game is hard enough without having to have that also as a burden. Any help would be appreciated. Mike

Unless you have an antique computer it is unlikely that any game settings will have any effect on Multiplayer game speed. The general cause of game lag is either a bad internet connection from one or more players and/or large distances between one or more players. There isn't anything that can be done about the latter issue, but you can try to choose opponents and maps that will work. I have a good connection, but I usually limit my BK Multiplayer matches to 1 vs 1 because most BKrs are in Eurpoe and I am in the USA. As a rule a ping (time from you to other player) of <300 is fine for a 1 vs 1 match, but ~200 or so is the limit for a smooth playing 2v2 or 3v3. If another player in Western Europe has a good connection I will usually see a ping of about 200-250. More like 300-350 for Eastern Europe, Russia, Asia. And remember that the game plays as slow as the slowest leg of the web of PCs in the match. If you had 3 guys in the same city and the other on the south pole the game will lag like mad. But if you drew a 5000 mile circle on the globe and all 4 players were spread out as far as they can be from eachother in it the game would likely run fine, if connections are all good.
P.S: Welcome aboard the forum. Did you ever get the port issue regarding BK Multiplayer hosting sorted out? I actually gave up playing BK Multiplayer for about a year when I got a new DSL service and I had the same port issue. I could play but not host. This means that the two main BK ports are opening, but not all 10 that are needed. It is bizarre that BK uses that many ports when hosting , but it does. I only decided to fix the issue a month or so ago when I heard Gamespy was going down and I wanted to fit some last BK matches in. Now Blitzkrieg Multiplayer has been saved due to the Openspy option.
Also: If you do have a marginal internet connection you can use Gamebooster to turn off all of the background bandwidth whores that are always running like update checkers and such. I played BK with dialup for years and when the connection is that marginal every little bit of bandwidth you can save is major.

Thanks...I knew about those issues with the pings an such...but, was just wondering about the actual settings in the options...I once heard that certain settings would help abit. I have a good internet connection. Guess it was just one of the guys we were playing. It gets really frustrating because there is not a quick reaction when selecting and trying to get your pieces to react/move/fire and such...got pissed an left... I got some of the Ports open...but, am having an issue with my router not letting me input more. I tried hosting and someone was able to get on(but left cause guess he didn't like that he had to DL the map)...so, am wondering if it will function like in its current state. I have a friend in town that plays so we are going to test(he has issues as well..lol) As of this writing the Gamespy is still working so am going to hold off installing the Openspy for now. Maybe we could get a game in one of these days. Take care and thanks for all the help(P.S. I am not the greatest player but still like the game after all these years...lol) Mike

I understand lag frustration all too well. I tend to issue a lot of complex stacked order sequences to units, and when these get lost in a lag moment the unit is going to just keep going , etc, and the worst part is a lot of times you can not tell if the orders were acknowledged by the unit or not, especially with units with missing acks (voices). During extreme lag situations the "Circle all of your shit at once and order it ALL to attack towards x.y" rushboys have an advantage during the first couple minutes, because all of the fancy orders issued by the expert player will be getting lost in the ether. When it is blinky freeze frame type stuff I will generally bow out of a match.
That being said, I think if you had a player enter your room you are all set as far as having the correct ports open. Be aware that there is a bug in Gamespy where your player state sometimes does not get reset (remains "In Game" if you look in chat room) after a match and you cannot successfully host a game. You can open a host room, but it will behave like when your ports were closed, you will sit there and wonder why no one can enter. The fix is to go back to the game menu and re-enter Gamespy or Openspy. The biggest bug being experienced thus far for Blitzkrieg on Openspy is the "fail to update the player state after a hosting a match" bug most of the time. Just make a habit of leaving the game host room back to the game menu after hosting a match, which is my standard procedure on Gamespy as well, altough it only happens maybe 1/10 times there. It is likely that this bug can be fixed at some point, but for now just leave and re-enter Openspy after a game.
Here is a snip from the Blitzkrieg ReadMe that lists the ports in case you might still need them and for future reference for the next guy to have this issue.:
When I entered all of these manually into my modem/router it worked. If you have only 8889 and 9089 open you can play but not host on Gamespy or Openspy. The other 8 ports are for Gamespy (and Openspy) functions like querying whether your match is still playing and allowing whispers from the chat lobby to players in game or in game hosting room. I *think* you can host direct IP games with only 8889,9089 open, but I have never verified this.
