The smoke ! I also use it whenever I can ... It's useful and immersive. Light mortars are ideal for that !

Ah you speak about the 76mm F-22 (the version captured by the germans is named 76.2mm-Pak36 in the game), in Mission Kursk it's more a field artillery gun but you're right it has both AT and HE capacity, when we use the commands of the field artillery guns and it also has the smoke shell command but i never try to use the smoke shells with the direct fire command (it's in this case that the AP shells are used) with it.
Edit : there are two weapon files for this unit, just one for the 76.2mm-Pak36 in MK, maybe in IronFrost it has the two weapon files
76mm_f22 : AP shells (i take a look in the .xml and don't find any reference to the smoke effect)
76mm_f22HE : HE and smoke shells (in the .xml this one has the reference to the smoke effect)

(tribute to the author : terribly cool, as usual ) i started this mission 3 days ago. today i was on the hills and i've used some smoke .. to avoid the shoots by that soviet position on my infantry squads in advance; that hammer could be very dangerous for the soldiers. it didn't shoot more until all enemies eyes in the area, also snipers (damn snipers .. ) and officers around, they have everybody the eyes closed by my smoke. you can see the smoke is in front of the enemy weapon but lightly towards north, where are enemies watchers, just in this moment that gun stopped to spit its shhh (thank you stan)

Stan does love those snipers-damn him. I hate the crack of the rifle, knowing one of my guys is dead. Now I blast every windmill and chicken coop and check every hay stack.

They give good sight to the enemy. The AI often fails to get a proper line of sight for its heavy weapons
