That's a request I asked in BKP and in BKHQ and I never had an answer so I switch for the rivers. That is working for sure....

I use rivers under walls that I do not want tanks/vehicles to drive through, like at compounds or factories.
After laying out the rivers, I cover them with dirt or terrain objects so if the walls do become destroyed, you can't see them. You have to be sure to have one or two entrances for vehicle traffic.
They don't have to be very big (wide) and they are great for making sure the vehicles and infantry do not go over certain obstacles.... like bluffs.
They are also pretty good for choke points.
Jeff is by far the guy that revolutionized the use of heights and rivers. Good Work Jeff.

EDIT: As for the question... why could we not build an invisible tile(s) consistent with a building or other impassible terrain object- type?
The passible area is defined within the Resource Editor so it seems to me if there is no door, and all of the tiles are red (impassible), they should be impassible. They could be invisible or could match something else.
Just a quick thought...

As a player, I would say to you that invisible impassible blocks would be frustrating. I have not yet figured out how to check the terrain for passibility. So on the rare occasion when I can't move my troops somewhere and there is no indication in the terrain why not, I get frustrated.
That being said, I can see a use for such things as impassible hedges (bocage.)

My thought was to use the impassable squares in places on the map that naturally seem impassable, like steep slopes. Putting them in the middle of otherwise passable terrain would indeed be confusing.

Indeed, that's where I put my impassible pattern, specially to avoid any vehicules to pass on unexpected path.

I must temper my constatation about using rivers along with walls and fences.
It seems that the problem was very located in the higher part of the map, a tiny place. Having to redrawing all the rivers for a second time, almost at the same places, I descovered that rivers placing at very near places from walls and fences bring no trouble in BK.
