You can add the skins easily. Depending on which one you need... just copy the 1_h.dds into another folder, then rename it 1a_h.dds and move it back into the unit folder. Do the same for the 2_h.dds (death skin). If you need the winter skin, juts rename them 1w_h.dds and 2w_h.dds. These are the high res textures. Most people do not use the compressed or low res.
About the upgrade for the unit. It may not be in the tanks folder, but spg. That would be my guess.... and a spg is artillery as far as the game is concerned. You can change this if you need to, but I would build another version if it is a spg.
The file system is pretty straight forward and depends upon the very strict format of folders and assignments. All names and folders must be exactly correct or you will have issues.
But it seems you are making tremendous progress, despite the little setbacks.
Good Luck.

Thanks major! youre right, this is great way to learn. Its just that i would like every unit be in the right year...so if you put a ausf d into france in 1940, and it turns out as a ausf F1 in the game..well then it sucks. ..but hey, solution already found so thanks big time for your help guys! ps:i still wonder why you cant use the WH units as a core units (maybe ill go to frosti on this one)

All names and folders must be exactly correct or you will have issues. To add a note, the 1.xml file of each unit further specifies the class it belongs to. For example, there are different types of artillery units which constitute the unit's characteristics and, very often, ablities (though this may only be exhibited in-game, not in the core units on the menu screen). As far as I am aware, all SPG units are treated as tanks in BK.
