So...I finally made some progress on this campaign
WARNING: Don't read the following text if you still want be surprised if you play the missions.
1st Mission
Hard and long mission. The counterattack was nice, although I was surprised about its strength, I didn't expect a ton of KVs and T34s in October 1941. Luckily they attacked exactly where my 88 stood. They still overrun the position with their infantry but the incoming german tanks recaptured it.
When it came to the end, the Russians made massive charges all over the map with a MASS of infantry and a battalion of BTs and BA10s. It wasn't to easy to fight them off, because I had already taken all objectives and just moved my tanks in to win the mission when they came. All tanks were destroyed by the same 88, but their infantry again overran the village, destroyed my entire light tank battalion sent (7 SdKfz, 2 Pz38(t)) with their grenades and AT-Rifles and were finally destroyed by more reinforcements coming in. Another mass of infantry tried to retake the sawmill with 2 waves, one coming from the direction of the Barracks and one coming from the map edge, but they didn't stand a chance against my tanks and motorised infantry. Another huge group of infantry retook the barracks and destroyed my entire Infantry there (maybe 10 squads, not all full). I was quite confused what the point of this counterattack is. The mission was basically over and there was no objective to repulse it. Maybe I would leave out this counterattack, as it is confusing and isn't even an objective.
Notice also that the mission is quite hard before you get stugs and SdKfzs, because the Russian infantry is superior to your units.
The mapping is good and detailed. The villages seem to compromised to me. There is not enough space, so trucks gets stuck in them, which is really annoying. Another problem is the ailogic.dll which makes StuGs totally useless in the house-to-house battle. The wrecks on the road to the sawmill don't fit in with the snow below them .
The "Island" in the middle of the river causes bugs if you refresh infantry. Several trucks were driving around there and units got stuck on the Island. Something seems to be a bit buggy there.
All in all its a good map, but the infantry fight is very hard and long and the counterattack at the end is confusing. It could be a bit more dynamic. The historical background informations given create a very good atmosphere and excuse some weaker parts of the mission.
2nd Mission
As you already warned me that this mission is über-hard, I prepared for a bitter defence battle
I must disappoint you. I won it in the first try with no reloads
I could hold Posselok until enemy aircraft and artillery came it. Then it quickly fell into enemy hands. I could retreat only a few soldiers .
Then the battle for the other 2 villages started. The time-limited defence it cool. Nice idea. I could fight off the first attacks easily. Russian bombers bombed the monastery in Otenski all the time, destroying my entire artillery. My fighters couldn't stop them and enemy fighter shot them all down. My Stukas also suffered losses, but they did well. In Possad the enemy penetrated my line after maybe 30 minutes with his tank attack. Although all tanks were stuck in the minefield and some were destroyed by 88 and Stukas, the enemy infantry came into the village. I build a new defence in the middle of the village and held there without problems, when the message came: Possad has been overrun. My defence was still quite intact and only a few Russians were in the village. I managed to hold both villages for all 50 minutes and then I broke out. The breakout was already a disaster but luckily the mission ended when a few units reached the road .
I was again surprised about the number of T34 and KV1 on the enemys side. I had expected T26s and even worse tanks like T38 . But they all got stuck in the minefields and were no match for my units.
The bombers destroying all your stuff are the worst in this mission for sure. They are horrible!
I also notices that once your line is broken, the enemy starts to roll-off your entire line with minimal losses. My immediately closing the line again or retreating the entire line (even at high losses), this mission is quite winnable.
Mapping: This mission is mapped a bit worse than the 1st mission. The minefields around the villages look to compromised and unrealistic. How would your own soldiers get into these villages in real-life where your mines can damage your own men. imo, this is a serious flaw, as the whole campaign has a very realistic feeling and style. Another point is the way in which the villages are build. They are super-detailed and look really really nice, but as trucks and horses cant drive over all these details, they cant reach the depots and thus cant refill your soldiers. They bug around, drive around your positions and seriously decrease your combat power. All villages are very filled up with units. I didn't knew what to do with them. Even at the end I had enough units.
All in all a good map as well. The hard and desperate defence battle creates once more a nice "historical atmosphere", while it is very challenging to play the mission because you totally lack tanks, both sides have strong airsupport, the enemy has more artillery and the detailed villages make coordinated defence very hard.
Good work with these missions, although they still can have some improvements .
I also tested the 3rd Mission already. You mapping is just next level there . Just awesome as far as I have seen.
The difficulty seems also next level there. I was not enable to hold the strong point in my first try. I even bought my StuGs there .
Wonderful chapter! How many missions are there? I hope over 10

Stanenberg
