You can identify my work pretty easy with tanks Viewer... the Copyright shows up both in WireMode and to the left in the part list.
Also I customize the History in the 1.xml file:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<base>
<History>
<Creator>MAJOR_PAIN</Creator>
<Copyright>7/29/2014</Copyright>
<Model>Chev_PreWar_Truck_v3</Model>
</History>
Then I include an End-User.pdf file:
END-USER Disclaimer:
Each model has a Copyright Stamp embedded within the model that cannot be removed without destroying the model. The Stamp can be detected in an image viewer, but does not interfere with the model's use in the game.
1. Models are original creations.
2. The End-User may enjoy the Model for Personal Use.
3. It is my desire that YOU enjoy the model. I only ask that you respect my work.
4. The producer/author must secure permission and agree to credit each model appropriately in a "Credit" Text File, for any model that will be included within a MOD or Map.
5. Improper Use within a MOD or Project without permission and/or credit, or any attempt to modify the source files will provide foundation to subjugate said person and project.
6. Feel free to contact me to complain or offer suggestions. I am only human and quite prone to mistakes from time to time.
The model, design and source files remain the intellectual property of Major Pain.
The original concept and use of the model are designed for usage within the Enigma Game Engine and Blitzkrieg, a product creation from NIVAL Interactive/Nival Group.

Of course... the EU can be removed from the unit folder and the History changed in the 1.xml... but there is no way to remove the Copyright within the model without causing major issues in the model.
I agree, we need to adopt a standard of some kind so Artist and Authors can protect their work. With several people out there with a history of stealing someone's work and passing it as their own, you must protect your work. The best method for most is going to be the 1.xml file.
I might come up with a script that can run inside the 1.xml so Artists can somewhat protect that file. The script would be designed to disrupt the 1.xml file if changed or removed. It would look like the History Section above but would also contain the protection script.
