Now, that's a lot easier... The shell comes from the 60mm mortar "Karl". The exact date and place seem unclear, but the pic definetly got taken in Warzaw during the uprising in 1944. Some sources claim, it's in the basement of "Adria"- building at Moniuszki 10 street on August 18. According to another source the pic got photographed in basement of Prudential building at Napoleon Square on August 30. And I would actually love, if you could drop some more words about those guys in the pic before, as I as well havn't heard anything of this unit before... And ... I like learning. Greetz from Hamburg.

60mm? You sure about that?
You can proceed.
Regarding Battalion. Was formed in late August of 1943, most members came from "Gray Ranks" (Polish: Szare Szeregi, scouting group). They liberated Gesiowka (which was a concentration camp).
During the attack on the Gesiowka they were supported by two captured Pz V Panthers. One Panther was under command of Wacław Micuta. I think that Panther was named Magda. They abandoned those tanks on 11th of August.
The battalion incorporated most of 383 prisoners from camp into their ranks, of these I think only three survived the fighting.
They were the part of Radoslaw group. What was left of the battalion managed to abandon Warsaw sometime around 25th of September.
After the war all members of the battalion were incarcerated in Soviet prisons (according to my records thats from 1944-1956)
Hope this helps.

The fellow handling that unexploded shell must have a hard time putting his pants on with balls that big.

Steel ones I tell you, steel ones... ;D Ok, what do we have here: Please tell me what are the two vehicles in the foreground of the picture? When got the pic taken? Please name the operation that those vehicles took part in. And as extra, extra Bonus for those, that shouldn't have a hard time answering the rest (yes, Tedi, MP, you know who I'm talking to... ): One of the two vehicles had gotten a nickname by it's crew. Wich of the two was it and what was this name?? Greetz from Hamburg.

Just to clarify: The "Big Balls" comment was about how brave the guy checking the unexploded Karl mortar shell was.

I stumbled upon this flic in a discussion- thread about German anti- partisan operations on www.forum-der-wehrmacht.de. The guys there named it being a Nashorn tank- destroyer. Exactly the same says the Bundesarchiv, where this photo is originated. And those guys really know about their stuffs. Greetz from Hamburg. Edit the edit: www.ww2incolor.com/german-artillery/gr10_5.htmlTo me, that looks a lot different. Greetz.

Yeah, its a Nashorn; I recently built one of those in 1/35; the giveaway for me is that vertical sleet rectangle and the steel arch above it above the main gun. The arch limits the max elevation of the gun. I thought so too MP, I think the size of the SdKfz7 makes the tracks and the gun seem small.
