My new computer with Vista won't run any variation of BK except vanilla. So I got a "new" old P-4 2.4 gHz and installed my old copy of XP on it. So far so good.
When I loaded and tried to run BK I got a message:
The instruction at "0x00409d36" referenced memory at "0x00acc794". The memory could not be "read."
Everything else seems to be running fine so far. Have I forgotten something? Do I need to install some extra files? The same happens with Rolling Thunder, but things like Cossacks Back to War run okay.
Once I get this up and running, I can run and test Mods!!! (I hope.)

I have SP2 and SP3 on CD from Microsoft, so that's reasonably up to date. I wasn't running anything else when I loaded them. I loaded DirectX 8.0 and then 9.0 from the CD's when I loaded the games, although the install of these last went rather quickly, as in almost instantaneously. Wonder if something is wrong in that department.

I would try this: 1) Uninstall the installation you did; 2) Make some cleaning of your windows registry; 3) If possible, make a new partition into the HD of your XP PC; 4) Copy the Run folder of your Vista PC and paste it to your new XP PC. Good luck!

I have checked it out and find that DirectX did not load at all. I have managed to load DirectX 8.1 - I think - but that doesn't make any difference.
The unit I bought already had Windows 2000 on it. I thought that when I loaded XP on it it would remove the 2000, but it hasn't. I am loading XP as a full reload so that it will remove the 2000 and clear out the registry. I will see what happens then.
If that works, then hopefully I can test out CFCS.

Clean install. Windows 2000 eliminated completely. Registry cleaned out (I formatted the C drive.) Clean install of XP, followed immediately by install of Blitzkrieg. No problems. I followed that with the included install of DirectX 8.1. It says it has installed, but when I check there is a DirectX folder with an empty Setup folder inside it. No DirectX. If I install DirectX 9.0 from RT it tells me it is installing and a microsecond later it tells me it has installed, but nothing has happened.
I'm not getting anywhere, except frustrated.
The important thing is I have 29 warranty days to figure out if it is a faulty install on my part or a problem with this used computer.
The more important thing is I want to get back to playing Blitzkrieg properly.

If you have a warranty, shouldn't you get support with it? if so, send a complaint along with the DXDiag.txt report.
Personally, I think you should save for a newer comp with vista or win 7.
