Correct. Tobruk August-September '42. You can proceed.

I'm going to guess Tobruk, which would be sometime in late 41/42. Nice Pith Helmets too (I have a British Army Wolseley Pattern one myself, very useful in the summer. Actually works!) Sorry to interrupt the usual flow of quizzing... But Squire, you shouldn't overestimate the quality of the German version of "safari- helmets". In both, nearly every book about the DAK (Deutsches Afrika ... yeez, you know it anyways ;D) and in a long conversation with a German Africa- veteran I had during the last year, it gets mentioned that the German africa- helmet was actually a good point to recognize someone who's "new" to Africa. Those helmets were just too bulky and heavy for normal living. The "old- africans" wore their plain field- caps or the shirts of their tunics over their heads... ;D But this may only count for the German model. Greetz from Hamburg. Edit: Of course, propaganda- photos were a completely different field.

And now I have to come up with something.
How about this? What general surrendered his army to the enemy, escaped from a POW camp, was given command of another army of the same nation, but was eventually forced to resign his position due to political manoeuvring by a rival?
(I hope there are no more than one person who can fit this description.)
Bonus marks: What general was in command of a corps-size unit, captured, escaped and was eventually given command of a corps again, where - I believe - he stayed until the end of WWII.
(Btw, the A1E1 was a Wild Ass Guess (WAG.))

I think it was General Sir Richard Nugent O'Connor.

That's the bonus one. What's the main one?

Henri Giraud maybe.

tedi88 gets the main question and the bonus! Congratulations.
Giraud was in command of the French 7th Army in 1940, which he surrendered before the armistice. He escaped from a German castle POW camp and hung around in Vichy France daring the French authorities to arrest him and turn him back over to the Germans. FDR shoehorned him into the command of the French forces in North Africa for Operation Torch, but de Gaulle managed to slowly remove all his authority until Giraud felt required to resign. So he basically lost two armies.
Next question.

Next question is: This photo was taken during late summer of '44 on the eastern front. Now I'm interested in following: 1. What battle? 2. What unit? 3. Who won the battle?
